Meet Me in St. Louis is a film of bits and pieces that never quite come together properly. The film has its charms, has some very good moments. But it is a bit ‘rough feel to it. There are the right pieces, but when put together, you’re left with the feeling that the film lacks a middle ground. The pieces do not fit properly, and some parts seem to be completely absent. Judy Garland, as you can expect, excellent, but does not seem quite enough help. A big star is not enough to make this film really shine.
The story follows the Smith family of St. Louis in the months before the 1904 World Fair City. This is the most important thing ever to hit St. Louis and everyone is excited. Well, the children are, in any case, it seems that adults give or take. There are four girls and a strange place to the procedure of Smith son in the family. Garland plays the eldest by four daughters Smith, Esther. She is in love with the boy next door, even though the film opens, has not yet met the guy. His older sister, Rose, has a romance of its own while the two younger girls, Agnes and Tootie are there primarily to engage in shenanigans. But, of course, Garland starred in this film so it is not surprising character of Esther is the main objective. Garland delivers very good very charming and has some memorable songs too. As long as you like big star of the film, although there are times that nagging feeling that the film is not really functioning as well as it should.
This is a film in which the first half works better than the latter. The configuration is better than the reward. Almost all the musical numbers are blocked in the first half of the film. Later, when you are looking for a song to perk things that are out of luck. The song very late in the film, but oh so familiar yourself a Merry Little Christmas is awesome and well performed by Garland. But as wonderful and poignant that this song is energetic, it is not. The lively songs come and go too quickly for the film clean. And these songs are risky anyway. The Trolley Song really works. The title of the song sticks in your head if more as a nuisance than a pleasure. And when something works, it seems that the film has no idea how to follow it. The Trolley Song sequence is great, but as soon as it ends before month jump forward in time a sequence of Halloween, which in the grand scheme of the film, it seems rather irrelevant, utterly useless. Truck was not going anywhere? In fact, it was, but the scene that should have been there with his many musical accompaniment was cut. Which makes it rather shocking when, at the end of the film, a character refers to this stage we have ever seen. Only the best example of how this film is uneven. A pile of coins, some good, some cases, some of which have been put together and disappointing end result is not quite satisfied. This is not a bad movie, by any means, even bother to try Garland if nothing else. But after a promising first half the energy situation of the film seems to drain slowly. There is no doubt that the pieces were there to make a better film than this. But in this case, these pieces have never been able to implement as well as can be expected.
With a good cast, an interesting story and some beautiful musical numbers, it is a very pleasant and enjoyable classic that is worth seeing more than once. While in a sense, it’s nostalgic, it’s really recognizes some of the things that are most important (family), regardless of the time. At least for those who love the classic movie, “Meet Me In St. Louis” is a film very hard not to love.
This is probably one of the best roles Judy Garland, and you get a good variety of material to work with. A couple of musical numbers to be with you after the movie is over, both because singing Garland and the way in which the songs were written themselves. Garland also gives a lot of life to his character quite simple. Many others in the distribution are good too, but Margaret O’Brien, who is the most memorable, which gives one of the best performances of this young artist.
The plot is usually overshadowed by the musical numbers, but it also works in itself. The plot focuses on the type of questions that are usually simple and familiar to them. Directly involved, but the film makes the family’s needs and concerns credible enough that you want to see how the story is generally optimistic, but it also has some serious times that work very well. Structure around the four seasons working well, and puts good material. Overall, “Meet Me In St. Louis” is a pleasant musical and well designed.
